The screening series Framing Collective Action presents artistic and documentary films created within collective structures. By linking historical and contemporary examples, the series explores the potentials of collective filmmaking through diverse aesthetic approaches. Each film program focuses on a specific spatial context (House, Street, Land) and examines the political and social impact of collective filmmaking both in front of and behind the camera, within and beyond the frame.

La serie de proyecciones Framing Collective Action presenta obras artísticas audiovisuales realizadas por colectivos. A través de ejemplos históricos y contemporáneos, la serie explora el potencial del cine colectivo mediante diversos enfoques estéticos. Cada programa se centra en un contexto espacial específico (House, Street, Land) examinando el impacto político y social del cine colectivo, tanto delante como detrás de la cámara, tanto dentro y como fuera del fotograma.

Behind each screen, each piece of digital information, each data exchange, hides a complex assemblage of material and labour, which includes not only mined minerals and electrical networks, but also present and removed workforces. The screen is thus a giant constellation of paid and unpaid labour, and any of its offered clicks is directly tied to geographically dispersed workers. These are workers who are mostly overloaded, underpaid, and highly dependent on their own screens. How can we witness the work that takes place behind the screens? The group exhibition out of office is an attempt at exposing this topic through the presentation of artistic works in a speculative setting—a co-working space replicated by the exhibition display aesthetics.

Detrás de cada pantalla, de cada paquete de información digital, de cada intercambio de datos, se esconde un complejo entramado de infraestructuras materiales y mano de obra. Se trata de una mano de obra tanto remunerada como no remunerada, trabajadorxs dispersxs en diferentes partes del mundo, en su mayoría sobreexplotadxs, mal pagadxs e igualmente dependientes de sus propias pantallas. ¿Cómo podemos ser testigo del trabajo que tiene lugar tras la pantalla? La exposición out of office es un intento de abordar este tema a través de la presentación de obras artísticas en un entorno especulativo: un espacio de trabajo que imita la estética de una oficina.

plants as a site of knowledge collects stories about the relationship between plants and memory, accounts that inform about the socio-political and economic entanglements present in ecosystems’ histories. What kind of memory do plants carry with them? To what extent are they part of cultural memory? Can time be turned back in ecosystems and if so, what are the (political) implications? The films that will be presented during this screening reflect on how plants have been separated from their environment in the service of colonial representation or economic interests in order to circulate or be grown in another place. This event included a billboard commission by Pille-Riin Jaik and a botanic walk by Birgit Lahner.

El programa plants as a site of knowledge recoge narraciones sobre la relación entre las plantas y la memoria, relatos que informan sobre los intrincados vínculos sociopolíticos y económicos presentes en las historias de los ecosistemas. ¿Qué tipo de memoria entrañan las plantas? ¿Hasta qué punto forman parte de la memoria cultural? ¿Podemos trasladarnos al pasado a través de los ecosistemas, y, de ser así, qué implicaciones (políticas) tendría este acto? Las obras de este programa reflexionan sobre cómo plantas han sido extraídas de su entorno en aras de la representación colonial o de intereses económicos. Además de la proyección de obras audiovisuales, este evento incluyó una serie de posters en espacio públicos realizados por Pille-Riin Jaik y un paseo botánico a cargo de Birgit Lahner.

The departure point for the exhibition is the term “voice recognition”: It refers, on the one hand, to technological systems for language assistance and detection, which are silently creeping into many parts of our everyday lives. On the other, the second part of the formulation – recognition – indicates that this phenomenon already assumes a certain concept of a voice that is to be recognised. What is the basis of this (re)cognition? Which voices are heard, and which not? And isn’t there a potential advantage in remaining incognito? Wake Words primarily presents moving image works and is thematically structured around the following four terms that obstruct the “correct” functioning of voice recognition systems: noise, echo, machine error, and improvisation.

El punto de partida de Wake Words es el término “reconocimiento de voz”: Por un lado, se refiere a los sistemas tecnológicos de identificación de voz que se están introduciendo silenciosamente en muchos lugares de nuestra vida cotidiana. Por otro, el “reconocimiento” indica también que este fenómeno ya presupone un determinado concepto de voz que ha de ser reconocida. ¿En qué se basa este (re)conocimiento? ¿Qué voces se escuchan y cuáles no? ¿Y no hay una ventaja potencial en permanecer no-reconocida? Wake Words presenta obras audiovisuales y sonoras, y se estructura temáticamente en torno a los siguientes cuatro términos que obstruyen el “correcto” funcionamiento de los sistemas de reconocimiento de voz: ruido, eco, error de máquina e improvisación.

The group exhibition Election Day hopes to foster the imagination of what is possible in a world dominated by fixed structures and inflexible forms of political representation. Coinciding with the elections of the city of Vienna in October 2020, the exhibition is composed of archival materials from political parties and candidates that were initiated by artists in moments of political change throughout history. Election Day will indeed offer alternatives: political options conceived through subversive artistic approaches that are not just involved in forming an object or a surface but in intervening in the electoral system. Blurring reality with fiction, renaming, occupying a symbol, allowing clogs in the system or voicing silenced issues. Opening up possibilities of action.

La exposición colectiva Election Day aspira a impulsar la imaginación sobre lo que es posible en un mundo dominado por estructuras fijas y formas inflexibles de representación política. Coincidiendo con las elecciones de la ciudad de Viena en octubre de 2020, la exposición se compone de materiales de archivo de partidos políticos y candidatxs que fueron iniciados por artistas en momentos de cambio político a lo largo de la historia en diferentes partes del mundo. Los proyectos presentados en Election Day ofrecen alternativas: opciones políticas concebidas a través de planteamientos artísticos subversivos que no se limitan a formar un objeto o una apariencia, sino que intervienen directamente el sistema electoral difuminando los límites entre realidad y ficción, renombrando, ocupando símbolos, permitiendo obstáculos en el sistema, dando voz a cuestiones silenciadas y abriendo posibilidades de acción.

Published in 1980, Camera Lucida is undeniably one of the most relevant books about the photographic medium. This exhibition with the same title showcased a series of artworks arranged in a specific temporal order. It was through this choreographed succession of works and their consequently impermanence on site that Roland Barthes’ book was visually and poetically revisited. Shaped in the form of an audiovisual essayistic exhibition, the show Camera Lucida aimed to function as a new way of reading Barthes’ text, a reading that could be described as deconstructed, fractured, or distracted, similarly addressing our contemporary modes of apprehending visual and textual information.

Publicado en 1980, Camera Lucida (La cámara lúcida) es sin duda uno de los libros más relevantes sobre el medio fotográfico. Esta exposición con el mismo título presenta una serie de obras de arte dispuestas en un orden temporal específico. A través de una sucesión coreografiada de obras y su consecuente impermanencia en el espacio físico se revisita el libro de Roland Barthes tanto de forma visual como poética. Configurada en forma de exposición ensayística audiovisual, Camera Lucida pretende funcionar como una nueva manera de leer el texto de Barthes, una lectura que podría describirse como deconstruida, fracturada o distraída, adjetivos que también caracterizan modos contemporáneos de aprehender la información visual y textual.

Unsolicited exhibition was an exhibition through e-mail that showcased advertisement messages from artists’ businesses to recipients that had not granted verifiable permission for this to occur. All artworks/businesses displayed at Unsolicited exhibition explicitly labeled their audiences as potential consumers, used corporate culture mechanisms and were involved in the provision of goods and services. From conventional restaurants to speculative companies, from traditional yard sales to futuristic enterprises, all the projects appeared in the inbox of more than 1000 unaware visitors from July 16 – October 29, 2017.

Unsolicited exhibition (Exposición no solicitada) fue una exposición a través del correo electrónico que presentaba mensajes publicitarios de empresas producidas por artistas visuales. Estos anuncios se enviaban por e-mail a destinatarixs que no lo habían solicitado, de ahí el título de la exposición. Todas las obras de arte/empresas expuestas en Unsolicited exhibition se dedicaban a la provisión de bienes y servicios, utilizaban lenguajes corporativos e identificaban explícitamente a sus destinatarixs como potenciales consumidorxs. Los proyectos incluidos en esta exposición, que iban desde restaurantes convencionales a empresas especulativas, desde mercadillos tradicionales a empresas futuristas, se enviaron a la bandeja de entrada de más de 1000 personas entre el 16 de julio y el 29 de octubre de 2017.

Current signs is a project to which contemporary artists were invited to express their actual concerns and demands in form of protest banners. What must we demand or protest against? What needs to be expressed publicly? What statements need to be taken to the streets? The resultant 16 protest banners designs, conceived by a wide range of artists, give a visual answer to these poignant questions. Printed in editions of 50, these banners were on view at das weisse haus from the 20th of February until the 28th of March, where visitors could take them for free as long as they were available.

Current signs es un proyecto al que se invitó a artistas contemporánexs a expresar sus preocupaciones y reivindicaciones reales en forma de carteles de protesta. ¿Qué debemos exigir o contra qué debemos protestar? ¿Qué hay que expresar públicamente?¿Qué declaraciones hay que sacar a la calle? Los 16 diseños de carteles de protesta resultantes, concebidos por un amplio abanico de artistas, dan una respuesta visual a estas preguntas urgentes. Estas pancartas, impresas en ediciones de 50 ejemplares, estuvieron expuestas en das weisse haus del 20 de febrero al 28 de marzo, donde lxs visitantes pudieron llevárselas gratuitamente.

The Artist Talk Fest was a long durational event that presented talks from a wide variety of contemporary artists. These talks provided an insight into the mental processes and ideas of each of these artists, producing an encounter between their artistic expression and the wider public through a first hand experience. The first version of The Artist Talk Fest happened on May 29, 2016 in San Francisco at the R/SF gallery. A second version took place at Espacio Odeón in Bogota on October 30, 2017. Now The Artist Talk Fest can be viewed everyday here.

El Artist Talk Fest fue un evento de larga duración que reunió charlas de una amplia variedad de artistas contemporánexs. Estas conferencias proporcionaron una visión de los procesos e ideas de cada unx de estxs artistas, generando así un encuentro entre su discurso artístico y el público en general. La primera versión de The Artist Talk Fest ocurrió el 29 de mayo de 2016 en en la galería R/SF (San Francisco). Una segunda versión tuvo lugar en el Espacio Odeón (Bogotá) el 30 de octubre de 2017. Language to be looked @ Things to be read was an exhibition of a wide variety of artists mailed language and/or things. This exhibition took place within the visitors’ e-mail inbox, to which a piece of an artist’ correspondence was sent every Sunday from the 3rd of April to the 25th of September 2016. The artworks shown were formerly exchanged via the postal service and now inhabit online art institutional archives in digital form. Thanks to their digitized format, this wide variety of correspondence pieces, that range from personal letters to pieces of mail art, were curated to form a poetic and eternal network that revisits seemingly old forms of exchange through current electronic mail services.

Language to be looked @ Things to be read fue una exposición de una amplia variedad de cartas y postales producidas por artistas. Esta exposición tuvo lugar en la bandeja de entrada del correo electrónico de lxs visitantes, a la que se enviaba un fragmento de la correspondencia de unx artista cada domingo desde el 3 de abril hasta el 25 de septiembre de 2016. Las obras expuestas habían sido enviadas antiguamente a través del servicio postal y ahora se conservan en formato digital en diferentes archivos institucionales de arte. Gracias a su nuevo formato digitalizado, esta amplia variedad de piezas de correspondencia, que van desde cartas personales a piezas de arte postal, se han seleccionado para formar una red poética y eterna que revisa formas de intercambio aparentemente antiguas a través de los actuales servicios de correo electrónico.

For The Reader, artist/writers were asked to imagine what’s happening on the page of a book, or in the mind of the women reading it, in an historical painting. Dozens of these paintings from museum collections around the world have been identified for the project. Audio tracks, the readers, can be heard by placing the mouse over a painting.

Para The Reader (La Lectora), se pidió a artistas y escritoras contemporáneas que imaginaran lo que ocurre en la página de un libro, o en la mente de las mujeres que lo leen, en un cuadro histórico. Para el proyecto se han identificado docenas de estos cuadros procedentes de colecciones de museos de todo el mundo. Las pistas de audio, las lectoras, pueden escucharse colocando el ratón sobre un cuadro.

Desktop Show II was a second version of the Desktop Show that was presented on October 4th, 2015 as part of the exhibition Public Works: Artists’ Interventions 1970s–Now at Mills College (Oakland). This time, this exhibition of net.artworks through Skype’s desktop-sharing feature lasted around 30 minutes was screened live to a wide audience in the Lecture Hall of Mills College’s Fine Arts department.

Desktop Show II fue una segunda versión de Desktop Show que se presentó el 4 de octubre de 2015 como parte de la exposición Public Works: Intervenciones de artistas 1970s-Now en el Mills College (Oakland). En esta ocasión, esta exposición de net.artworks a través de la función de compartir escritorio de Skype duró unos 30 minutos y se proyectó en directo para un amplio público en la sala de conferencias del departamento de Bellas Artes de Mills College.

After an open call, we selected six unrealized projects by artists from outside of the United States. Through the artists’ proposals and interviews, we produced six videos in which an actor/actress explained each one of the unrealized projects. The artists chose a specific person for the video and worked with us in the script that the actor/actress would perform in front of the camera. Each video was then displayed on a monitor, on a pedestal, in the gallery, therefore giving each unrealized piece a physical form. The specific looping and edition of videos permitted to show one video at a time.

Tras una convocatoria pública de propuestas, seleccionamos seis proyectos no realizados de artistas de fuera de Estados Unidos. A partir de las propuestas y de entrevistas con lxs artistas, produjimos seis vídeos en los que un actor/actriz explicaba cada uno de los proyectos no realizados. Lxs artistas eligieron a una persona concreta para el vídeo y trabajaron con nosotras en el guión que el actor/actriz interpretaría ante la cámara. A continuación, cada vídeo se proyectó en un monitor, sobre un pedestal, en la galería, dando así forma física a cada pieza no realizada. La presentación y el montaje específico de los vídeos permitieron darle el protagonismo necesario a cada uno de los proyectos.
